Your Trip to Mexico

We are so happy that you are coming to Casa Chango at Sweet Retreats Mexico. Casa Chango is located just outside of Puerto Escondido on the Oaxaca coast.  Travel to and around the area is safe and friendly.

  • Your authorized airport taxi/shuttle service is included in your retreat if you book your travel to/from Puerto Escondido airport (PXM).
  • You can also fly into Huatulco (HUX) airport which is 1.5 hour drive from us.  See below.
  • Make sure you arrive/depart on designated days of the retreat in order to secure your complimentary taxi and accommodations.  Check your registration email for travel dates.   You can email us with any questions at SweetRetreatsMexico@gmail.com.

Tips for finding the CHEAPEST TICKETS!

  • If you search for flights from your airport to Puerto Escondido, and only find very high priced tickets with long layovers, you can try any of the following.
    • Try 2 separate searches, booking a round trip ticket from your airport to Mexico City (MEX), and then a separate round trip ticket from MEX to Puerto Escondido (PXM).  Make sure to allow plenty of layover time in Mexico City if you do this.  We recommend around 3 hours layover (just in case your arriving flight is delayed).
  • Search directly Volaris.com or VivaAerobus.com. Volaris has many cheaper and easier flight options that are not shown on 3rd party flight browsers.
    • Note:  If you have trouble  navigating the VivaAerobus and/or Volaris websites, try using a different browser.

Most flights to Puerto Escondido (PXM) originate in either Mexico City, Guadalajara (on Volaris), or Oaxaca City (look for AeroTucan).

Coming straight to Puerto Escondido**

If you don’t have time to stop in Mexico City for a night or you just want to get here, you can book your travel all at once to Puerto Escondido (PXM) airport.  Allow at least 3 hours layover in Mexico City so you can go through immigration and customs and check into your connecting flight with plenty of time. (Mexico City airport can be a little confusing, so extra time to find your way around can be very helpful.)  If you have extra time, you can change money, walk around and get your first Mexican breakfast in the airport.  Then your quick flight to Puerto Escondido lands you just 20 minutes from our retreat!

Stop in Mexico City for the day or night*

  1. Mexico City is awesome!  There are so many things to see and do there including museums, restaurants, plazas, markets, and historic ruins.  We love the Frida Kahlo museum and the Museum of Anthropology.
  2. This breaks up your travel and allows you to enjoy each step of the way.
  3. There are many hotels and hostels in Mexico City to stay in.   Make sure you hire a taxi from one of the ‘authorized taxi’ stands INSIDE the airport justbefore you step outside.  Pay the cashier and get a receipt to bring to your driver.  You can use uber to get around the city and back to the airport very cheaply.
  4. If you can only find flights with long layovers in Mexico City, do not fret!  You can store your bags in an airport locker, and take an airport taxi into the city for the afternoon.  There are numerous AMAZING museums, shopping areas, food, and historical sites to see in Mexico City.  It is a wonderful way to break up your flights/travel.  Also you could just rent a pod at the pod hotel and take a nap!

If you have a short overnight layover in Mexico City, we suggest staying at the Mexico City airport Pod Hotel (or for a safe siesta for a long day layover).  It is clean, comfortable and safe.   Another option is the Marriott Courtyard Hotel that is connected to the airport as well.

Fly directly into Huatulco Airport***

Another option is to fly into Huatulco International Airport (HUX) and take a shuttle bus from HUX to Puerto Escondido.  There are nonstop international flights and charter flights to Huatulco from many locations.  This is often the fastest and cheapest option, and we do it all the time.  If you are coming from Canada, try WestJet, SunWing, Air Canada, or Air Transit for flights to Huatulco.  Click here to see more options.  Check to see if that is a possibility for you.  The shuttle bus from HUX to Puerto Escondido is a 2.5 hour ride costing about $6 USD.  You can get a private taxi which takes 1.5 hours for $75 USD.  Both options are safe, and it is a beautiful drive. Click here for detailed instructions about taking the bus from Huatulco to Puerto Escondido / Casa Chango.

Bringing Circus Equipment on the Plane

Make sure you put all of your circus equipment and hardware in your CHECKED BAG.  Security at the Mexico City airport will most likely not let any equipment through in carry on baggage.

Travel Insurance

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance during the duration of your trip to protect yourself from any unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, inclement weather, retreat cancellation, lost baggage, or medical expenses.

If you are still confused or need some advice, feel free to email us at SweetRetreatsMexico@gmail.com.

See you soon!

*If you stay the night in Mexico City, you are responsible for booking and paying for your hotel/hostel and transportation while you are there.
**Your taxi from PXM to our accommodation is included in the price of the retreat if you arrive/depart on specified dates.  If you come early or late, you will have to get your own taxi.
***If you fly into HUX, you will have to take a bus or taxi to Puerto Escondido, and pay for it yourself.  It is very easy and cheap because there are many buses, taxis and shuttles running every day.
