Retreat Classes & Schedule

Our retreats are 7 days and 7 nights long, with 5 total days of classes. Each day has a morning and afternoon class session.  We use the following model which works very well:

  • Arrival day
  • 3 days of classes
  • 1 middle ‘rest’ day to go to the beach, turtle release and markets
  • 2 more days of classes
  • Departure day

Each retreat has a focus which is usually either aerial skills and/or sequencing, conditioning, artistry, or a combination. In addition, we suggest giving your students complementary skills which may include any of the following: flexibility, conditioning, technique, artistry, core work, floor work, yoga, stretching.

If you want to teach a beginning level aerial retreat, remember to diversify your week with less physically strenuous classes and excursions.  We are happy to help create a schedule for the perfect week for your beginners.

Sample of Daily Schedule

  • 7:30-9:30am  Coffee, Tea and Breakfast
  • 10am-1pm   Technique, Skills, and Stretching/Conditioning
  • 1pm   Lunch
  • 1-5pm  Pool-time, relaxing
  • 3:30pm Afternoon treat and ice tea/coffee
  • 5-6:30pm  Less physically exerting skills including floorwork, handstands, improvisation, stretching, performance skills, etc.
  • 7pm Dinner
  • 8-10pm  Evening Activities or Classes

Note:  This schedule template works well for most retreats and can be changed according to Teacher’s desires.

Co-teaching with Kerri or one of our resident teachers

Teaching a week-long intensive retreat can be a lot.  You may have multiple skill levels and/or interests to work with.  Since our retreats include a morning class and afternoon class each day (4-6 hours each day), curating your week is important.

You have the option to co-teach your retreat with Sweet Retreats director and master teacher, Kerri Kresinski to lighten your load and offer a wider range of class options and perspectives.  This can be a great way to reach a larger audience and potentially get more people to sign up for your retreat. Kerri has over 20 years experience teaching aerial, dance, and acrobatics, and over a decade of experience teaching intensive retreats to a variety of skill levels and disciplines. Read more about Kerri here.

Here is a list of Kerri’s specialty classes.  Class with Kerri is $100 USD/hour. This cost will be taken out of Teacher’s pay at the end of the retreat.

  • Aerial Silks skills and technique (beginning through advanced levels)
  • Lyra or Trapeze (beginning to intermediate levels)

Host Teacher Retreat Details & Obligations

We are committed to world class instruction at Sweet Retreats, so we always prioritize working with teachers with confidence and experience. Host Teacher Retreats are for teachers who have mastery of their craft, many years of experience teaching, and a strong student following. If you are interested in being a Host Teacher, please contact us at SweetRetreatsDR@gmail.com to start the conversation.

Host Teachers not only are responsible for promoting their retreat and bringing their following, but also for being a generous and present Host during the retreat. Outside of teaching classes, a Host Teacher is expected to be present for their students during most meal times and activities. This is important for creating a cohesive, enjoyable, and memorable experience. Classes alone are not enough to make a great retreat. Host Teacher must come prepared to create a warm and welcoming social environment for their students. If students become unwell physically, mentally or emotionally or have any personal problems on the retreat, it is the Host Teacher’s responsibility to support the needs of the student whether it be escorting them to a pharmacy, store or adventure, meeting with them outside of class to work on specific things or help them make plans for their goals, or mediate any issues that come up within the group. This can be a lot, so it is important to consider before deciding to be a Host Teacher. This is NOT a vacation for a Host Teacher. It’s work. Although if you manage your time well, you can still have both.

Please read more about Host Teacher Responsibilities here.

SCHEDULE

A few weeks before your retreat, we will send you a proposed schedule for the week for you to approve and/or make changes to.  The schedule is suggested based on an average week long intensive training retreat at Casa Chango.  Please consider the schedule for the needs of your particular students and make changes accordingly.  For example, for beginner retreats, consider having less physically demanding classes and more gentle ones and/or excursion options.  Or for more advanced retreats, make sure enough time is scheduled to give your students enough material to meet their needs.  Once the schedule is set, any changes will need to be requested in as much advance as possible to management.

Host Teacher’s transportation, housing, meals, and guest policy.

  • Host Teacher must book and pay for their own round trip transportation to/from Casa Chango including flight to/from Puerto Escondido (PXM) or Huatulco (HUX) as well as a taxi from the airport to Casa Chango.
  • Host Teacher accommodation includes a private room with a shared bathroom.
    • Teacher will arrive the same day as the retreaters. We are not able to accommodate early arrivals for the Teacher. If Teacher wants to arrive early to rest and acclimate, we suggest getting a hotel/airbnb in Puerto Escondido near the beach (everyone loves the neighborhood called ‘La Punta’). There are many affordable options.
    • It may be possible for Teacher to stay a few days after the retreat is over providing the next retreat is not full. Please email us for more information.
  • All meals are included for the duration of the retreat.
  • When booking the entire retreat center, there is the option of having 2 teachers. If there are 2 teachers, the cost for the additional teacher’s food and accommodations is as follows:

    • 2 Teachers with separate rooms – $1400
      • This fee is halved for retreats with 12 or more paid student sign ups and waived for retreats with 16 or more paid sign ups.

    • This fee is waved for retreats with 12 or more paid student sign ups.
    • If the SO wants to join classes, and the retreat does not fill, tuition for the Teacher’s SO will be as follows: (note: SO will not be counted as a paid sign up. Therefore Teacher will not make any financial profit. All SO fees go to Casa Chango.)

Discounts

Sweet Retreats Alumni Discount
Many retreaters love to come back again and again to try different retreats.  Sweet Retreats offers $200 off tuition for repeat retreaters for each retreat they sign up for.  This helps people try something new.  If a Host Teacher has already taught at Sweet Retreats and is coming back to teach again, and a retreater is coming back to a second retreat with this Host Teacher, Sweet Retreats and Teacher split the loss ($100 each). This will be accounted for in the Host Teacher’s payment at the end of the retreat.

Referral Discounts
Sweet Retreats offers a referral discount for people who refer someone to a Sweet Retreat. Host Teacher has the option to offer a referral discount for any student who refers someone to the Host Teacher Retreat.

Host Teacher Discounts
If Host Teacher wants to make a discount for any of their paid participants, that discount will come out of their compensation at the end of the retreat.

Low Season Discounts
Discounted retreats may be available between June-September. Please email us at sweetretreatsdr@gmail.com for more information.

BIPOC / LGTBQ Scholarship

As a small step to diversifying circus and aerial arts, Sweet Retreats is supporting retreat scholarships for persons who identify as BIPOC and/or LGTBQ. Host Teachers have the option to offer one full or partial scholarship to their retreat. As long as Host Teacher has a minimum of 10 fully paid sign ups, Sweet Retreats will give a spot for this cause. If Host Teacher offers a full scholarship, neither Sweet Retreats nor the Host Teacher will not make any profit from that student’s participation. If Host Teacher offers a half scholarship, the Host Teacher will receive half of the agreed per person pay for that spot depending on total number of sign ups.

Host Teacher agreements

  • Teacher must reserve specific dates for their retreat.  Teacher must pay a deposit of $1000 to reserve the agreed upon dates.  Deposit will be refunded after the retreat if Teacher has brought the minimum number of students.
  • Teacher must book and pay for their own transportation to Puerto Escondido.
    • Click here for travel info and options.
    • Sweet Retreats recommends that the Teacher secure travel and medical insurance during the duration of the trip and encourage the students to do the same.
  • Host Teacher Retreats are for Teachers who already have students/followers who will sign up for the retreat.
    • Teacher is responsible for marketing their retreat.  The retreat will also be listed on Sweet Retreats website.  Teacher takes full responsibility to promote the retreat and get sign ups.
  • Host Teacher agrees to promote the retreat regularly to all of their followers from the time retreat is confirmed through the end of the retreat.
    • Teacher must be prepared with dynamic, professional posts.
    • Teacher agrees to use the following tags for each and every post:  @sweetretreatsmx @casachangomexico
    • Upon request, Sweet Retreats will provide photos for Teacher to use for posts.
  • During the retreat, Teacher agrees to be present for their students outside of classes during mealtimes and activities in order to help create a cohesive and inclusive experience. Teacher may also add group activities, lectures, and ‘roll out sessions’ to the retreat schedule in order to create a unique experience for their students. Teacher must come prepared to create a warm and welcoming social environment for their students. This can be a lot, so it is important to consider before deciding to be a Host Teacher.
    • Please feel free to ask us for ideas about creating a welcoming and inclusive dynamic with your group. We have a lot of experience with this subject and are happy to give you some ideas.
  • PHOTO SHOOT – We offer an aerial photo shoot on the last day of the retreat. Teacher will be responsible for planning/scheduling the photo shoot, organizing the students, and being in charge of time management during the photo shoot so as to make sure all students get photos during the allotted time period of the shoot. We suggest:
    • Organizing in advance with Stuart (photographer) to make sure you have all bases covered.
    • Make a set list for your students so they can be ready when it is their turn for photos.
    • Do the math. If you have 12 students, and the photo shoot is 2 hours long, each student should get about 5-7 minutes. This will allow for a little time at the end for last minute ideas. Teacher is responsible for this time management and organization.

Advertising

It is the Host Teacher’s responsibility to promote and fill the retreat.

It is important that Teacher feels confident in filling the retreat and has a strategic marketing plan to do so.  Poor/inconsistent marketing often causes low or no sign ups.  Also it is important that Teacher plans a retreat using the skills they are known to excel at.  What will people follow you to Mexico to do?  What sounds good for your clients’ vacation?

We strongly encourage Host Teachers to define their retreat as clearly as possible listing the focus of the retreat, apparatus(es), skill levels, teaching style, and prerequisites. This will attract students that will enjoy and benefit from your specific retreat.

All Host Teacher retreats will have a page on the Sweet Retreats website.  Upon confirmation of Host Teacher Retreat, Sweet Retreats will build a webpage for the retreat. Host Teacher must email text and photo content for the webpage about the retreat for the Sweet Retreats webpage.   Please feel free to look at our website for ideas. The Host Teacher Retreat will be listed on the front page and retreats listing page on Sweet Retreats website, but will not be listed in the dropdown menu. Host Teacher must make sure to direct their followers to the correct links.

Teacher should also advertise the retreat on their website, social media pages and to their email list and followers being sure to link to the Sweet Retreats page to sign up.

When advertising their Host Teacher Retreat, remind potential student sign ups to sign up and pay before the early bird discount ends to save money.  This gives them incentive to commit early and helps to avoid retreat cancellation due to low enrollment. More marketing tips:

  • Post regularly on social media.
  • Post stories regularly reminding people about it. Don’t forget to show how excited you are about the retreat and how great it is going to be.
    • Remind people of how inspired and rejuvenated they will be from the retreat.
  • Point out the early bird discount and encourage people to sign up early to save money.
  • Follow up with students who have taken interest and/or students who you think would thrive at the retreat.
  • Offer to schedule a call to answer questions to any potential sign ups.
  • Send email newsletters reminding your followers about the retreat.
  • Offer incentives for students such as ‘sign up today and get a free half hour one on one session during the retreat’.

Booking

Booking is done through Sweet Retreats.  We will receive payments and registration forms, and include teacher in emails between students and Sweet Retreats.
At the end of the retreat Sweet Retreats will pay Teacher along with the $1000 deposit (if applicable) minus any fees that Teacher owes (for excursions and extras/ad ons). Teacher will be required to fill out a W-9 tax form. Sweet Retreats will send a 1099 for the amount paid.

Cancellation Policy

It is important that Teacher feels confident in filling the retreat and has a strategic marketing plan to do so.  Poor/inconsistent marketing often causes low or no sign ups.  Teacher should start to promote the retreat immediately upon confirmation, and must NOT wait until the last minute to promote the retreat. Also it is important that Teacher plans a retreat using the skills they are known to excel at.  What will people follow you to Mexico to do?  What sounds good for your clients’ vacation?

  • If there are less than 3 sign ups at the mark of 3 months prior to the first day of the retreat, SR reserves the right to cancel the retreat.  If this occurs, SR will keep 50% of the deposit ($500) and return 50% ($500) to Teacher.  This policy is to protect both parties.
  • For Teachers booking the entire retreat center – If there are less than 6 sign ups at the mark of 60 days prior to the retreat, SR reserves the right to cancel the retreat.  If this occurs, SR will keep the entire deposit.   SR reserves the right to run the retreat with a different teacher.
  • For Teachers sharing the retreat center with another Host Teacher Retreat – If there are less than 3 sign ups at the mark of 60 days prior to the retreat, SR reserves the right to cancel the retreat.  If this occurs, SR will keep the entire deposit.   SR reserves the right to run the retreat with a different teacher.
  • Host Teacher must bring the minimum students (as stated above) paid in full to the retreat.  It is important that Teacher feels confident that they can get the minimum sign ups before committing to the retreat.
    • If Host Teacher does not meet the minimum paid sign ups, Sweet Retreats reserves the right to choose one of the following:
      1. allow Host Teacher to teach the retreat without pay and lose their deposit
      2. refund tuition paid by the participants
      3. decide to run the retreat with a different teacher chosen by Sweet Retreats.
  • If Teacher cancels the retreat at any time after paying the deposit, SR will retain Teacher’s entire deposit.
    • Sweet Retreats retains the right to decide whether to hire another teacher to run the workshop or to choose to cancel and reimburse the paid retreaters.
  • If a confirmed participant cancels, Host Teacher will not be paid for that participant.
    • In the case of a last minute cancellation for a sold out retreat, SR may pay Teacher a partial payment for the cancelled participant.
  • Sweet Retreats reserves the right to cancel a retreat due to weather, natural disaster, war, or “acts of god,” and will inform Teacher as soon as possible.  Alternative arrangements will be offered including refunding Teacher’s deposit.  SR cannot, however, compensate Teacher for airfare or travel costs incurred.
